For the first time – International Applied Chess Day

In 2025, friends of the game of chess will celebrate the International Applied Chess Day for the first time – October 8. The initiative is from the International Society for Applied Chess, which was established on this day eight years ago in Pazardzhik, Bulgaria. The idea of ​​declaring October 8 as International Applied Chess Day was adopted by the members of the organization at the last regular Annual General Assembly.

On the occasion of International Applied Chess Day, a Chess Festival will be held on October 7 at the Social Services Complex "Chovekolubie", Bulgaria. It will be attended by  Prabita Urweiler Ph. D. - member of the FIDE Social Commission. The guest will learn about the application of the Chess model in the rehabilitation and integration of people with mental health problems. The Festival will feature a Demonstration of checkmate etudes, a Discussion about the Similarities between Chess and Life, a Quiz with prizes, and Chess with Live Pieces.

On October 8, a Press conference will be held at Bulgarian News Agency, Sofia. The event will be attended by Radislav Atanasov, Ph. D. - Chairman of the Board of the ISAC;  Prabita Urweiler, Ph. D. from the FIDE Social Commission, Nadezhda Kuzermanova - Psychologist at the Social Services Complex. The goals and mission of the ISAC, various aspects of applied chess, perspectives and cooperation with FIDE will be presented.

Memorandum of Cooperation with FIDE

A Memorandum of Cooperation between the International Society for Applied Chess and the Social Commission of the World Chess Federation is to be signed on October 7, 2025. The event will take place at the headquarters of the International Society for Applied Chess, 12 Dr. Long Street, Pazardzhik, Bulgaria.

In connection with the signing of the Memorandum, Prabita Urweiler Ph. D. - member of the FIDE Social Commission - will be visiting Bulgaria.

INTERNATIONAL ONLINE CONFERENCE EXPLORING SOCIAL CHESS 22 February 2025, 16:00 - 20:30 EET

The International Applied Chess Society informs you that on February 22, 2025 (Saturday) from  15:00 - 19:30 CET /16.00 – 20.30 ЕЕT an online conference on "Researching Social Chess" will be held. The event is organized by the World Chess Organization - FIDE.

The aim of the event is to bring together researchers, educators, practitioners and chess enthusiasts to explore how chess contributes to improving the quality of life, promoting social development, inclusion, empowerment and rehabilitation.

 16:00 - 16:15 - Congratulatory address

 16:15 - 16:20 – FIDE Social Chess Video

 16:30 - 18:30 - Presentations of studies and case studies - 25 minutes each + 5 minutes of questions and answers

 19:00 - 19:30 - Individual sessions - in this panel participants can join different virtual rooms, each representing one of the social chess projects:

  • Chess for Freedom: exploring the impact of chess on prisoners, promoting rehabilitation, critical thinking and a sense of purpose;
  • Protection chess: support for refugees and vulnerable groups, providing stability, focus and hope in difficult circumstances;
  • Chess for Recovery : exploring the role of chess in aiding recovery from addiction and chronic illness, including cancer;
  • Infinite Chess: empowering children with autism spectrum disorder, improving cognitive and social skills;
  • Longevity chess: promoting the mental and emotional well-being of older adults, combating memory loss and promoting active aging.
  • Chess for Change and Hope: Bringing positive change to underserved communities, including slum children, orphans and marginalized groups.

In these sessions, scientific and operational issues can be raised and discussed among participants. Moderators will be responsible for documenting the discussion and presenting a summary in the main session after the rooms close.
